Wow, if you struggle with APA format for your research papers, take a look at this excellent tutorial that was developed by Wendy Mages, a doctoral student at Harvard Graduate School of Education. It’s called “APA Exposed: Everything you always wanted to know about APA format but were afraid to ask!”

http://gseacademic.harvard.edu/~instruct/articulate/APA/player.html

The Citation Machine website is also very helpful, http://citationmachine.net/. It is a free service that will help you format your APA citations. On the Citation Machine home page, you will see the list of 4 Citation Formats on the left of the screen. Select APA. Then select from the list of Print and Non Print resource types. If you don’t see your resource type in the list, click on “more resources” (to the right of APA). Online databases such as EBSCOHost are considered “Work from a subscription service.” Once you select the resource type, fill out the form with all the required info; author, title, etc. When you click on “submit,” Citation machine will generate the citation for you.

Check out the Public Library of Science, http://www.plos.org/.

On the right side of the page, you can see that PLoS has many different journals ~ Biology, Medicine, Computational Biology, Genetics, Pathogens, Clinical Trials and Neglected Tropical Diseases. The journals in PLoS are “open access” which means that they are available free online. You can read, download, copy and distribute these articles in any way you wish, as long as you give credit to the authors.

Another great website is Science.gov, http://science.gov/. The website, sponsored by the Federal Government, is your gateway to over 50 million pages of authoritative science information.

Just the other day an ASAP student told me that she was looking for a specific journal. I asked her if she had checked Lightner’s A - Z List. This is a very useful tool and now it’s even better from home!

If you go to Lightner’s website, you will see a gold “Find It” box. Click on the link for the A-Z list of Library Journal Holdings.

The term “Holdings” means that the item is in or “held” by Lightner - this could be the actual journal or an electronic version. In the drop down menu on the left side of the screen, you will see “Title begins with.” If you know the exact, correct title, just type it in and hit Search. If you know just a few words of the title, click on the drop down menu and select “Title contains all words”, type in the words and hit Search.

The computer will then tell you if Lightner has a journal with those title words. If Lightner has the journal in electronic form, you will see a link to the particular database, for example Academic Search Premier.

Click on the link to go straight to that particular database. The computer will prompt you to login using your Keuka e-mail user name and password.

Once you login, the computer will take you to the database and you will be able to search the journal that you searched for in the A-Z list.

Questions? Just shoot me an e-mail or post your question on this blog.
